Robert Smith

Graveside services for Robert (Bob) Pierce Smith, 92, of Thomasville will be held at 3PM on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Arkansas Street. Rev. Dr. Timothy Filston will officiate. Mr. Smith passed away on March 16, 2016 Southern Pines. Born February 1, 1924 in Remsen, New York, he was the son of the late Leroy Austin Smith and Marjorie Gray Smith. Bob was married to Joyce Elizabeth Daniel Smith for 61 years, who preceded him in death on March 15, 2016. Mr. Smith earned his photography degree while living in New York and did freelance photography work before serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was a decorated combat veteran during World War II in the South Pacific. Attending Syracuse University on the GI Bill after returning from the war, he graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1950. He retired from being General Manager of Waverly Mineral Products in Meigs, Georgia in 1997. Mr. Smith was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include son Dan Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; son Dave Smith and wife Leyla and granddaughter Anise Smith of Sarasota, Florida; and brother, Willard A. Smith of Walnut Creek, California. He was preceded in death by sister, Marcia L. Smith. The family will receive friends Friday, March 18, 2016 from 6PM until 8PM at the funeral home.
