Roy La Mere

Roy La Mere, 80, of Thomasville, Georgia Popular television personality passed away on May 27, 2002 at his home, after a long battle with cancer. Born in Ladysmith, Wisconsin on August 3, 1921 he was the son of the late Roy E. and Lillian Riant La Mere, both of whom preceded him in death. Four brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death. He was married to Beatrice La Mere on April 5, 1942 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Staci Bea La Mere and Darci Riant La Mere, both of Woodville, Florida. Other survivors are sisters-in-law Charlotte Melting of Fargo, North Dakota, Marie La Mere of Los Banos, California; brother-in-law Tom Allen of Coral Springs, Florida and many nieces & nephews. He spent his entire adult life in radio and television broadcasting, except for three years in the Army during World War II. His career began in Wisconsin in 1941 in radio. From there he managed radio stations in Norfolk, Virginia and Arlington, Virginia. He was the manager of the Chamber of Commerce in Virginia Beach, Virginia from 1963 to 1965. He began his television career in El Dorado, Arkansas at television station KTVE and in Monroe, Louisisana where he was station manager from 1970 - 1972. In 1972 he came to WCTV, Channel 6 in Thomasville, Georgia as Community Affairs Director and air personality. During this period he was involved in many community activities including the Jerry Lewis Telethon in which he was the local M. C. for many years. He was invited to Taiwan, China as guest of that government in 1981 as a participant in their agricultural product exchange. He was elected President of the Thomasville-Thomas County Chamber of Commerce in 1983. He served as Chairman of the Rose Festival in 1984-1985. In 1990 he was honored as the first local celebrity to be selected Grand Marshal of the Rose Parade. He retired from WCTV, Channel 6 in 1986. He was of the Methodist faith. A memorial service will be set for a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Southwest Georgia.
