Graveside services for Ruth Harvard Salter of Thomasville, Georgia will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Friday morning, April 17, 2020. Ruth was the loving wife of Mr. Ronald Howard Salter, daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Lucius Bryant Harvard , Sr. (Grace Chastain), and sister of the late Lucius “Bryant” Harvard, Jr. She is also preceded in death by her son, Robert Harvard Salter. Survivors include her son, Ronald Howard Salter, Jr. , and Rosemary Grace Salter Jackson (Dan Jackson). Her grandchildren include Robert Clayton Salter (son of Robert), Henry Harvard Jackson and Wyatt Taylor Jackson. She is also survived by her siblings Joseph Chastain Harvard, Nancy Harvard Jones and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Much like Thomasville’s beloved Big Oak, Ruth was a pillar in our community. In fact, she was born in the home where the Big Oak stood in her front yard. It was the birthplace of her mother, Grace, as well as other family members. Her Thomasville heritage is one in which she was incredibly proud. Ruth had an incomparable zest for life and her people. She was most known for teaching dance, etiquette and ballroom. Every 7th grader considered it their rite of passage to attend her class. In addition to dance, she taught English, Speech, and Typing through the years in high schools in Albany, Cairo, Thomasville, Monticello, FL and El Paso, TX. Ruth was a graduate of Florida State University. In her younger years, she was an active member of the local chapter of the DAR where she served as Regent, Rambler Rose Garden Club, Junior Service League and the First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to Thomasville Landmarks (thomasvillelandmarks.org) or Thomasville’s Center of the Arts (thomasvillearts.org).
