Ruth Laverne Hayes Suber died at Woodleaf Suites, her home away from home, on May 1, 2018. She was born to Trudie Eliza Ingram Hayes and Henry Dennis Hayes on August 16, 1927. Funeral services will be held at the chapel at Allen & Allen Funeral Home on Hansell St. in Thomasville, Ga. at 11am Saturday May 5th. She was born the last of twelve siblings. She had six brothers and five sisters; Theron, Floyd, Leon, Robert, Lewis, Jesse Brook (JB), Gertrude, Inez, Mary, Jewell and Irene. She was always referred to as the “baby.” She was proceeded in death by all except for JB who at 95 still resides in Meigs, Georgia, where the family was born and raised. She loved and appreciated each and every member of the extended Hayes family, always feeling proud to have been a part of such a large caring family. She was raised on a working farm, resulting in a lifelong love of the land and all it could produce.
On April 4, 1947 she married the love of her life, Thomas Clyde Suber, Sr. She, starting her new life away from the farm. He, returning from service in the United States Navy after World War, II, found themselves working for Commercial Bank in downtown Thomasville. After courtship, they married in a small ceremony in a relative’s home and honeymooned on the beaches of Florida. For many years they walked to and from work at the bank from their apartment on Bartow St. holding hands and dreaming of their future. Her beloved husband preceded her in death on June 20, 1991.
They were parents to three children; Connie Marie, who was stillborn in 1957, Kay Suber Vann and husband Thomas of Thomasville and Thomas Clyde Suber, Jr. and wife Marsha of Senoia, Ga., who all survive. Surviving grandchildren are Bryce Vann Brock and husband Seth, Thomas Jared Vann and wife Bethany all of St. Simons Island, Ga, also Thomas Clyde Suber, III and wife Nicole; James Jackson Suber and Sarah Oliver Suber all of Senoia, Ga; great grand-children are Hayes Vann Brock, Rhoan James Brock, Caroline King Vann and Thomas Sammons Vann, all of St. Simons Island and Ava Pauline Suber and Thomas Clyde Suber IV of Senoia.
Foremost, she was a devoted mother and wife. She served for many years as the teacher of the 10 year old girls Sunday school class at Dawson Street Baptist Church, where she was a charter member. As long as she was physically able, she devoted much of her time to all activities of the church. She pursued bookkeeping as a career and spent time sharing her talent with many downtown businesses throughout the years; Inman Drug Company, Neel’s Department Store and Al Dixon Men’s Wear.
Mimi, as she was lovingly know to her family, was a gentle, sweet spirit who touched all that knew her. She had a green thumb, heart of gold, and a kind manner. She was a divine cook who was famous for her pecan pies and sweet tea. We take much comfort in the fact that she is now once again united with “Big Daddy” and her Lord.
“It is so hard to say good bye to yesterday. I’ll take the memories with me to be the sunshine after the rain.”
We are forever grateful for the healing hands and kind hearts of all the caregivers at Woodleaf Suites; for the expert, attentive and compassionate care from Dr. Rick Fenlon and staff at the McIntosh Clinic.
