Samuel (Sam) L. Harvill, Sr., 85 of Thomasville passed away October 15, 2023 at Archbold Hospital. Born, May 15, 1938 in Rome, Ga; he grew up in Decatur, Georgia and lived in Thomasville 1997-2006 2015-2023. He was the son of the late Gilbert and Lenora Harvill
He was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Gilbert (Carolyn) Harvill, Daughter Debbie and Son Corey. He is survived by his wife Kathy Hamilton Harvill of Thomasville; Children, Sam Harvill, Jr of Lake Wales, Florida, Jana Harvill, Correa (Ivan), Florence, MA; Step Children, Liza Goodpasture Jones (Blake), Boston, GA, Lem Goodpasture (Dona Lyn), Albany, GA; Grandchildren, Samuel Harvill, III (Cheyenne) Saint Peters, MO Austin Harvill (Jen), North Hollywood, CA, Luca Correa, Florence, MA Dru Jones, Boston, GA, Katie & Addy Grace Goodpasture, Albany, GA Great Grandchild, Alexander Lee Harvill, Saint Peters, MO.
After graduation from Decatur High School, Sam enlisted in the United States Coast Guard serving on multiple ships throughout the U.S. and aboard. He retired Chief Warrant Officer in 1979. Following his military career Sam was especially proud of earning Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from The University of Southern Mississippi. He then earned a Ph. D. in Education from Louisiana State University. He retired from Valdosta State University and continued teaching adjunct classes for Central Michigan University in the Atlanta area until finally retiring in 2016.
Sam was a lifelong learner and always wanted to see what was over the next hill. He enjoyed travel and had been on every continent. He was loved by his students for his dedication to a classroom filled with a mixture of academics and practical experiences.
The family will receive friends 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at his residence. He will be laid to rest at a later date at Crest Lawn Cemetery in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to South Georgia Low Cost Spay & Neuter Clinic, 425 Covington Avenue

Affectionately known as Big Sam, family and friends loved him for his constant antics, his grandiose sea stories, and his endless cache of witticisms, adages, and proverbs.
