SAMUEL JONES MITCHELL, JR.
Samuel Jones Sam Mitchell, Jr., 78, of Valdosta passed away on Monday, May 22, 2006 at his home after a short illness. He was the son of the late Martha Eugenia Mallette and Samuel Jones Mitchell, Sr. of Thomasville, Georgia. Sam was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church and the Grace Denis Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ethel Ogburn Mitchell of Valdosta; by his daughter Ethel Scott Mitchell and grandson, Mitchell Carl Hebner, of Atlanta, Georgia, and by his daughter, Mary Mallette Mitchell Faherty; and her husband Timothy John Faherty. He is survived by his two sisters, Evalina Alethia Mitchell Kilburn residing at the Presbyterian Nursing Home is Quitman, GA., and Louise Saxman Mitchell Golden and his brother-in-law, Jefferson Monroe Golden, Jr. of Thomasville. His nieces and nephews include Louise Mitchell Golden Hubman, Martha Mallette Golden Foster, Patricia Adela Golden Blanton, Jefferson Monroe Golden, III, James Carey Scott, III, Marion Nelson Scott, Sr., Laura Kaye Courson Karas, George Scott Courson, and Mary Ethel Courson Waters.
Sam served in the U. S. Army, 1st Calvary Division, 8th Battalion, during World War II being stationed in Japan in 1945-1946. In 1951 Sam earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA.
He was employed in the meat industry his entire working career. He retired from Dixie Packers Inc. of Madison, Florida, a meat processing plant of Winn Dixie Stores of Jacksonville, Fla. Sam supervised the construction of Dixie Packers in 1970-71 and served as the plant manager for 19 years before his retirement.
Sam was the 4th Great Grandson of the first Constitutional Governor of the State of Georgia, John Adam Treutlen. Some of his ancestors were among the Huguenots who settled in the township of Purysburg in the colony of S. C. prior to the establishment of the colony of Goergia. Other ancestors were among the Purtians who immigrated to the Colony of Massachusetts in 1630 and whose descendants settled in St. John's Parish Liberty County, Georgia by 1752 where they developed rice plantations.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, Georgia with the Rev. Cyrus S. Mallard and the Rev. V. L. Daughtery officiating. Laurel Hill Cemetery is the resting place of many generations of Sam's forefathers. The family will receive friends at Carson McLane Funeral Home in Valdosta on Wednesday, May 24, 2006, from 6:00 until 8:00PM.
