Sandra Ellen Smith Piland, 81, of Thomasville, GA passed away on February 2, 2025 after a short illness while surrounded by family.
Sandra was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the daughter of Edgar Gartrell and Miriam Thelma Adams Smith. She married William Ernest (Bill) Piland on December 9, 1961. They shared 63 wonderful years of marriage during which they raised four children and enjoyed six grandchildren.
Sandra graduated from Thomasville High School in 1961. After graduation she began a 40 plus year career with the City of Thomasville, taking a break to stay home with her children when they were young. She filled administrative rolls with the utilities department and human resources, retiring as the HR training specialist. She developed lifelong friendships with many of her co-workers and thoroughly enjoyed getting together with the “girls”.
Sandra was a devoted member of Dawson Street Methodist Church where she volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, board member, and served on various committees.
Sandra provided loving support and encouragement for all of her children’s endeavors. She attended many of her children’s events to cheer for success and comfort the disappointments. She later attended many of her grandchildren’s events to provide the same support and love. She was very proud of all her children and grandchildren.
Sandra had a beautiful smile that would warm your heart. She was a sweet, kind, caring, and loving person who provided support, encouragement, compassion, and wisdom to her family and friends.
Sandra’s pound cake, which was made with lots of love, was always a hit at family gatherings – especially with her grandchildren who knew her as Nana.
Sandra is survived by her beloved husband, Bill; her children, Bill Piland Jr (Pam), Dicky Piland (Sherrie), Frankie Piland (Laura), and Jennifer Piland Sheldon; her grandchildren, Brett Piland, Caitlin Piland, Jessica Piland, Ashley Piland, Elizabeth Sheldon, and Meredith Sheldon; her brother Doug Smith (Ann); and nieces, Emily Smith and Sally Rossignuolo (Dominic).
Preceding Sandra in death are her parents, Edgar and Miriam Smith.
Sandra’s life was a testament to love, faith, and kindness. Her warm smile, positive attitude, and patient personality will be missed by all who knew her.
A service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 3:00 pm at the Allen & Allen Celebration of Life Chapel. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 7, 2025, from 5-6:30 pm at Allen & Allen Funeral Home.
