Sara Frances Godwin Singletary

Sara Frances Godwin Singletary, 83 of Thomasville, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013 in her home from complications of ovarian cancer. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Thomasville, Georgia. Reverend Milton C. Gardner, Reverend Martin Carnes, and Reverend Tom Jacobs will be officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons Joel Singletary, Reid Singletary, Taft Singletary, and Jared Hagler Singletary and her grandsons-in-law Joseph Cone and Steve Exum. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 4, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Allen and Allen Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow the funeral at Laurel Hill Cemetery Lot 33 section G. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Allen and Allen Funeral Home. Born in Boston, Georgia on October 24, 1929 to Remer Hardy Godwin and Betty Burns Godwin she was third of five children. Sara graduated from Thomasville High School in 1947. At Thomasville High she was the treasure of her senior class and played on the girls' basketball team and was involved with the Commercial Club and Tri-Hi-Y. Sara was married to Willis Leonard Singletary on June 19, 1948; they were married 64 years. Their marriage was blessed with three sons; Harold Wade in 1953, Joel Keith in 1956 and Willis Michael in 1959. As a dedicated Mother to her three sons she was involved in any activity they joined. She was active in The Central Booster's Club for over thirty years; many of those years she served as the treasure of the organization. She and Willis served as chaperones for every Central High School dance from the time Harold was in the tenth grade until well past the time Mike graduated. She was a member of First Baptist Church Thomasville for 77 years and enjoyed the fellowship of the Gwen Kelly Sunday School class for her entire adult life. Service to others was what made her happiest, be it planning and preparing a meal, wrapping presents for the nursing home, raising and canning vegetables or going to visit those that were shut-ins; she always had a smile on face if she was able to help someone else. Sara is survived by her husband Willis; sons Harold, Keith and Mike; daughter-in laws Allison Keith and Teresa Mike; grandchildren Hollie and Joseph Cone, Joel and Dawn Singletary, Keisly and Steve Exum, Taft Singletary, Jared Hagler Singletary; Reid Singletary, Carson Singletary, and Meg Singletary; great grandchildren Morgan Exum, Pheonix Singletary, Corban Cone, Trenton Singletary, Sara Sullivan Cone and Brayden Exum. As well, she is survived by sisters-in-law Louise Donnelly Warner Robins; Glenda Hartnett Warner Robins, Betty Singletary Albany and Betty Godwin-Boles Whigham. Nieces Ginger Norman, Ann Corban, Jane Guy, Babs Johnson, Karen King, Gina Huckabee, Laura Godwin, Kristy Harper, Terry Sherman, Carla Clark, Karen Archie, and Donna Hartnett and nephews Al Kimbrough and Joe Godwin also survive Sara. Sara was preceded in death by sisters Adele Kimbrough and Louise Boles as well as brothers Tullis Godwin and Lawson Godwin. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be given to Hospice of Southwest Georgia or the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
