Funeral services for Shirley Jean Hunter, 91, of Thomasville, will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 13th, at Dekle Cemetery in Union County, Lake Butler, Florida at 970 SW 4th Ave, Lake Butler, FL 32054. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband, the late Ormand E. Hunter, who transitioned to his heavenly home in 2016.
Shirley Jean Johns Hunter transitioned to her heavenly home on March 6, 2025, in Thomasville, GA. Born April 10, 1933, in Florida, she was the daughter of the late Theodore M. Johns and Ida L. Griffis. On February 18, 1950, in Sanford, Florida, she married the love of her life, Ormand E. Hunter, and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage together.
Shirley pursued a degree in Early Childhood Psychology and dedicated her career to working with children with disabilities in the school systems. She furthered her education by completing an associate's degree in Psychology.
Shirley loved her family very much. She spent numerous hours baking and cooking everyone's favorite recipes. She loved to garden and study her Bible and was eager to pray for all who had needs with whom she came in contact.
Her faith was central to her life, as evidenced by her membership in the Church of God of Prophecy, where she served as the Children's Director and Pastor's wife for many years. She later, when able, attended the First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, GA.
Shirley Jean Johns Hunter is survived by her daughter, Shirley Frances Hunter Lewis, and her husband, Charlie Lewis of Thomasville, as well as her son, Ormand Edward Hunter Jr., and his wife, Jill W. of Thomasville.
Shirley was one of nine children and was preceded in death by Yvonne Muse, Mary Bess Alexander, Loran Johns, and Theodore Johns. Surviving siblings include: Larry Johns, Janet Johns, Connie Wilson, and Patricia McAlexander.
She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Zachary Lewis and his wife Leah, Nicholas Lewis and his wife Jennifer, Adam Hunter, and Rachel Hunter. Additionally, she leaves behind her four great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Benjamin, Nicholas, and Colson. Zachary Seth Lewis II preceded her in his promotion to Heaven.
