Terrell Albie Singletary

October 25, 1924 — September 5, 2010

A celebration of the life of Terrell Albie Singletary, 85, from Thomasville, GA will be held at four pm, Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at First Baptist Church. The Reverends Milton C. Gardener and Dan Spencer will officiate. Mr. Singletary passed away September 5, 2010 at Archbold Memorial Hospital.
Born October 25, 1924 in Thomasville, Terrell was the son of the late Albie Marle Singletary and Lillian Watson Singletary. He graduated as a member of Thomasville High School's class of 1942, where he played football and participated in band. Under the U.S. Navy V12 program during World War II, he attended the University of Wisconsin. There he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and met Nancy Lee Deck, whom he married on March 23, 1946.
Upon returning to Thomasville, he became a general contractor and established Modern Builders, Inc. Over the years, he forever changed the landscape of Thomasville, playing a crucial role in beautifying, restoring, and preserving many of the city's prominent landmarks, which include the Lapham Patterson House, Kevin's Sporting Goods, the Susina Plantation home, and the W.R. Milton YMCA renovation. His Christian faith was the cornerstone of his life. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church where he served faithfully in many capacities: the chairman of the board of deacons several times, member of the two most recent pastoral search committees, and as a Sunday School teacher.
Among his many civic activities, Terrell was a member and president of the Thomasville Kiwanis Club, where he was active for over 50 years. He was a member of the City Board of Education for 12 years where he also served as Chairman. In 1970, he was a founder, trustee, and builder of Brookwood School. He was the Director of the Thomasville and Thomas County Chamber of Commerce as well as Thomasville YMCA. Terrell served on the Thomasville Board of Realtors and Thomasville Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a member of the Thomasville Touchdown Club and Brookwood Booster Club, and in 1995, he was inducted into the Thomasville-Thomas County Sports Hall of Fame. He was a regular on the sidelines carrying the chain for both Thomasville and Brookwood schools.
Terrell and his wife, Nan, were actively involved in the community, sharing their animals and farm. In 1977, they were awarded the first-ever Couple of the Year Award. Terrell had a passion for Tennessee Walking Horses, which led to the establishment of Thomasville Stables. The family enjoyed riding and showing horses together across the country. They have continued to enrich the lives of others through their work with Camp Arrow. At the age of 75, Terrell became a certified NARHA riding instructor and founded Hands and Hearts for Horses, a therapeutic riding center for riders with special needs.
Preceded in death by his son Thomas Brayton Singletary, he is survived by: his wife of 64 years, Nan, his son and daughter-in-law Bill and Suzanne Singletary of Philadelphia; daughter, Polly Singletary of Flowery Branch; daughter, Nancy Cheney of Thomasville; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Michael Hanna of Thomasville; and grandchildren John-Paul Singletary and Katie, Will, and Brayton Hanna.
This chronological list of Mr. Singletary's life and accomplishments, however extensive, cannot begin to touch on the intangible qualities of love, integrity, and strength of character that he carried with him throughout his daily life. Always concerned about the needs of others, he shared his time, energy, and talents with anyone and everyone. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hands & Heart for Horses, P.O. Box 1095, Thomasville, Ga 31799 or First Baptist Church of Thomasville, P.O. Box 2790, Thomasville, Ga 31799. Visitors may sign the online guest register at www.allenfh.com .
