Thomas James Callaway III, age 71, passed away November 6, 2020, in Thomasville, Georgia. Born in Albany, Georgia on February 15, 1949, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas James Callaway, Jr. of Albany. Tom was a graduate of Albany High School and the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Tom was an active leader and volunteer in the Thomasville community. After retiring as President and CEO of Commercial Bank, he served as an advisor at Allen Mooney and Barnes. An avid supporter of Thomasville, Tom had been president or chairman of Thomas University, the Thomas County Chamber of Commerce, the Thomasville Planning and Zoning Board, Glen Arven Country Club, Thomasville Landmarks, the Thomasville Rod and Gun Club, and the Thomasville Jaycees. He has held many leadership roles in organizations including the John D. Archbold Memorial Hospital, Rotary Club of Thomasville, the Thomasville Music & Drama Troupe, the YMCA, the United Way, the Red Cross, the Cancer Society, and Ducks Unlimited. He was a long-time member of Thomasville First United Methodist Church. Tom enjoyed the outdoors, spending his free time hunting, fishing, and playing golf.
Tom is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sherrie Edwards Callaway, children Thomas James “TJ” Callaway IV and wife Catherine of Atlanta, John Pace Callaway of Tallahassee, sisters Cantey Pace Callaway of Atlanta, Merrel Callaway Hattink and husband Willem, of Atlanta, and granddaughters Jane McKenzie Callaway and Julia Pace Callaway of Atlanta.
A private family ceremony will be held Monday, November 9, 2020, in Thomasville. In lieu of flowers, it was Tom’s request that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, Thomas University, Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe, and Thomasville Rotary Club.
