Services for Thomas Coke Penland of Thomasville are at 3:00PM on Thursday, April 28, 2005 at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Leigh Ann Raynor, Rev. Weyman Cleveland and the Rev. A. Bob Dixon will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Penland died Saturday, April 23, 2005 at his residence. Born August 22, 1919 in Blairsville, GA., he was the son of the late Thomas Gordon and Annie Hughes Penland. On April 11, 1943 in Boston, GA he married Evelyn Adams Penland who preceded him in death on May 29, 1988. Then on June 9, 1990 in Thomasville he married Sarah M. Penland who survives. Mr. Penland graduated from the University of Georgia in Dec. 1942. While there he served as president of his freshman class and was a member of the Demosthenian Literary Society, Sphinx, Gridiron and X-Clubs. During World War II he served in the 121st Infantry Regiment and was wounded at the Battle of Brest in France and received the Purple Heart. After the war he completed Law School at the University of Georgia and began his practice in Thomasville in 1948. He was a former member of the American Bar Association, Kiwanis Club and American Legion. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church Thomasville, member of the Sue McTier Sunday School Class, and served on the Board of Trustees. Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Deanna Penland Ramsey and Richard R. Ramsey, Jr., of Thomasville, daughter, Dr. Penelope Penland, Santa Fe, New Mexico and stepson and daughter-in-law, George L. Chick and Terri H. Chick; sister, Mary P. Cook of Blairsville, GA.; granddaughter and spouse, Rosemary Ramsey Pearce and Stephen F. Pearce, grandson and spouse, Richard Rufus Ramsey, III and Denise F. Ramsey, granddaughter, Rebecca Penland Ramsey, grandson, Robert Thomas Ramsey, step grandsons, Austin L. Chick, Kevin L. Miley; great grandsons, Jack Harrison Ramsey, Thomas Joseph Ramsey and William Benjamin Pearce; numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 975, Thomasville, GA 31799, Lewis Hall Singletary Oncology Center, 116 Mimosa Drive, Thomasville, GA 31792 or Hospice of Southwest Georgia, 818 Gordon Avenue, Thomasville, GA 31792.
