Thomas Sidney Jones, 88, passed away at his home at 2303 Gatlin Creek Road in Thomasville on Friday, July 25, 2014. Mr. Jones was born on January 6, 1926, the son of Boyd Lane and Blanche Jenkins Jones of Worth County, Georgia. He married Sally Frances Strickland of Moultrie in 1946. An astute businessman, he owned and operated construction, farming, and farm-related businesses. Throughout his life, Mr. Jones was best known for his steadfast faith in God, his devotion to the church, and his love for family and friends.
He graduated from Moultrie High School in 1944 and served in the United States Army 989 Field Artillery Battalion in Central Europe during World War II. In 1946, following his honorable discharge from military service, he returned to Moultrie and married his sweetheart Frances. He completed two years of VA school while working fulltime with his father in his construction business. He later partnered with his brother in Jones Brothers Masonry, the business they owned and operated together for more than 20 years. In 1971, Mr. Jones acquired the John Deere franchise for Thomasville and established Jones Tractor Company, the business he operated with his sons until his retirement in 2001.
Mr. Jones’ early years were spent in Worth County. His family moved to Mississippi for a business venture during the Depression. That experience shaped his values and he often shared memories of how his mother and father shared with those in need even as they struggled to meet the needs of their own family. The Jones family returned to Georgia in 1939, first to Worth County, and soon after to Funston, Georgia.
In the first years of their marriage, Mr. Jones and wife Frances lived in Funston and Moultrie. From 1949 until 1977, they lived in the Hamilton community of Colquitt County, where they raised a family of five. In 1977, they moved to Thomasville. Mr. Jones was deeply devoted to his wife Frances and they were married 59 years when she passed away in 2005.
Mr. Jones was actively involved in church leadership as well as in business and community organizations. He served as a deacon at Funston Baptist Church, Rose Hill Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church of Thomasville. He also taught Sunday School and, most recently, was part of Roy Petrey’s Senior Adult Men’s Sunday School Class at First Baptist. Mr. Jones served on the board of directors for Commercial Bank for 20 years. He also served on the board of trustees of Hamilton School while his children were in school there. Following his retirement, Mr. Jones was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and served in various leadership roles, including president.
