Thomas Sherman

September 15, 1946 — February 18, 2023

Thomas "Tom" Sherman of Thomasville, passed away on February 18, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and accomplishments. Born on September 15, 1946, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Nell and Thomas Sherman, Tom was the eldest of two brothers, Tim and Mike.
Tom was a devoted husband to his wife Bonnie for 39 years and a loving father to his children, Brian Sherman (Kim) and Tracy Surdykowski (Dick). He also leaves behind a legacy as a caring grandfather to Baylee Smith (Taylor), Brooke Sherman, Richard Surdykowski and Caitlyn Surdykowski, and as a doting great-grandfather to Addie Smith. Tom was a dear stepfather to Amy Shepherd Cook and is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and his former wife, Joy Thrasher.
A graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Tom played football as a starting tackle on the 1962 state championship team. He was a multi-year letterman for his outstanding performance. He proudly served in the Air National Guard Reserve from 1968 to 1976 with honor and distinction. Tom's impressive 50-year career included positions at Sunnyland Foods, Bryan Foods, Smithfield, and John Soules Foods. He ultimately retired to care for his beloved wife Bonnie, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Sadly, Bonnie was not able to live at home after her disease progressed, but Tom made a point to visit with her every single day.
Tom's love for his community was evident through his involvement in various clubs and organizations. He served as the area chairman of Ducks Unlimited, a member of the Kiwanis Club, and president of his neighborhood homeowners association. A passionate outdoorsman, Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing. His pride and joy was entertaining at his house on the bay. His most treasured memories include teaching his grandchildren how to clean and grill fish they caught, sunset cruises, and enjoying family boat rides to see dolphins swim. The early morning duck hunts with his buddies ended with the best duck casserole in town.
An accomplished golfer, Tom was elected President of Glen Arven Country Club in 1982. He cherished time spent playing golf with friends and family, giving lessons to Brian and Tracy, and witnessing Bonnie's unforgettable hole-in-one on the 16th hole. Tom's love for travel took him on numerous adventures, from cruises to trips to Sea Island, golf in Scotland, and attending his grandchildren's sporting and cheerleading events.
In a testament to their unbreakable bond, Tom and Bonnie passed away within 24 hours of each other, reuniting in eternal love. Their devotion to one another is reminiscent of the lyrics from their favorite Randy Travis song, "I'm going to love you forever, and ever, amen."
Tom's zest for life, his unwavering love for his family, and his dedication to his community will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
