Our beloved sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend, Virginia Stafford Slayden, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at her home in Thomasville.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Friday, May 12, 2023, at Allen & Allen Funeral Home’s Celebration of Life Chapel.
Virginia was born on July 14, 1938, to the late Delsie Louise and George W. Stafford Jr. After graduating from Thomasville High school 1956, she went on to study drama at LaGrange College. After marrying, she realized that drama was a difficult field to earn a living and went back to obtain an education degree and Masters in Mathematics. She loved her students and teaching and was beloved by all her students and coworkers.
Virginia was the mother of a beautiful son, Herbie Slayden, who passed away at six years old with cystic fibrosis.
During her professional career as an Education Coordinator for DeKalb County Schools, she met the love of her life, Houston Hatler and was remarried. They spent many wonderful years traveling to Germany and Europe together.
Virginia was an avid gardener and won Garden of the Month several times in her neighborhood. She and Houston collected European antiques, fine art and glassware and they loved to entertain friends and family.
She moved back to Thomasville after her husband passed away and rekindled many of her high school friendships.
Virginia loved playing bridge, going to concerts, and spending time with her family.
Beautiful, caring, thoughtful and generous; Virginia will be dearly missed by her entire family.
Virginia is survived by her brothers, Warren Stafford (Beth) of Thomasville, and Ronald Stafford of Tiburon, California; niece Kathy MacQuirter (Danny) of Thomasville, as well as niece Cynthia and her children Billy and Katherine of Salt Lake City, Utah; great-nephew Gordon MacQuirter of Tifton, and great-niece Madeline Duncan (Cole) of Lake Park, Georgia and their son George.
A private graveside will be held at a later date in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Thomasville Humane Society.
