William Anthony (Bill) Ahler, 83, passed away in Thomasville, Georgia on April 20, 2024. He was born in Lafayette on September 27, 1940 to Robert and Helen (Shoemaker) Ahler living most of his life in Lafayette before retiring to Thomasville.
Bill graduated from Jefferson High School and enlisted in the Army as a military policeman in Europe. Bill and his father, Bob, owned and operated Bob and Bill’s Tavern (now Lefty’s) on Schuyler Ave. Bill apprenticed to be a Carpenter, then became a member of Carpenter & Joiners Local # 215, and eventually rose to Construction Superintendent and worked on such Lafayette landmarks as the Tecumseh and Sunnyside Middle Schools, the Caterpillar and Eli Lily manufacturing plants, several Purdue buildings and countless National Homes in Lafayette and across the country.
Bill will be missed, and is survived by his wife of 30 years, Gail, his siblings: Alice, Mary, Jim, Paul and Dave, his children (by Barbara (Behler) Ahler): Donna, William Jr., Steven, and Janice, and his grandchildren: Ryan, Robin, Erin, Mous, Aidan, and Anna, and his stepsons: Jason and Brian. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Robert Jr., Thomas, and Helen.
A memorial service will be held in Lafayette at a future date. Bill will be interred at St. Boniface Cemetery.
