Services for William E. Bill Giles, Sr., of Thomasville are at 2:00PM, Thursday, March 23, 2005 at First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer and the Rev. Dr. Milton Gardner will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are Chuck Giles, Nick Giles, Todd Wilkes, Ted Wilkes, Reese Brookerd and David Tinsley. Mr. Giles died March 21, 2005 at his residence. Born March 27, 1930 in Thomasville he was the son of the late Austin B. Giles, Sr. and Johnnie Lee Evans Giles Ward. On September 19, 1961 at the First Baptist Church he married Naomi Bentley Giles who survives. Mr. Giles joined the United States Navy right after leaving Thomasville High School in 1950. His first ship was the USS Salem, spending two years on its crew. After getting to see all the Mediterranean countries, Mr. Giles was sent to the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. He then moved around for several years before reporting for sea duty again, including a Korea tour. Mr. Giles spent a year in Vietnam before retiring after 20 years of service. He then spent 10 years in the Fleet Reserve. His most memorable experience was having dinner with Monaco?s Prince Ranier. He also retired from the Thomasville Police Department and worked a short time with Alpha Security Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Thomasville High School Touchdown Club and escorted the Thomasville Bulldogs football team for many years. Other survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Winton Barrow of Pavo, GA, son and daughter-in-law, Bill and J.J. Giles of Thomasville, brother, John Palmer Giles of Thomasville; grandchildren, Lauren Chandler, Darby Barrow, Taylor Barrow and Emma Giles. He was preceded in death by brothers, Sterling Giles, Austin B. Giles and stepsister, Lucy Ward Blalock. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-9PM on Wednesday.
