William Gerald "Gerry" Gilmer passed away in Thomasville, Georgia, on August 9th, 2024, at the age of 79. Gerry was one of six children born to William Bryan Gilmer and Frances Young Gilmer. Gerry's large military family moved often following his father's service through Texas, Georgia, and Florida. He spent his formative and favorite high school years in Panama City, Florida at Tyndall Air Force Base.
After graduating from Bay High School, he continued his love of learning, earning his undergraduate degree from Florida State University, followed by a master's and a doctorate from Auburn University.
Gerry's career in higher education kept him employed at some of the same schools where he was a student including Auburn University, Mississippi State, Thomas College, and Florida State University.
After years of administrative and teaching positions, Gerry was called to the ministry and returned to school at Emory University where he obtained a Master of Divinity. He preached through Alabama, Georgia, and Florida spending many years at John Wesley United Methodist in Tallahassee, FL.
Gerry was an extraordinary teacher, whether through a class at Florida State University or a sermon he preached on Sunday, he impacted many students and parishioners through his teachings.
Gerry is survived by his wife Deloris Gilmer, of Thomasville, GA, daughter Natalie Gilmer, of Buda, TX, stepdaughter Mallissa Harden, siblings Pamela Sweeden, Deborah Gilmer Zurawskyj, and Joseph Gilmer of Columbus, GA, and Jim Gilmer, of Florence, AL.
