Services for William James Spears, 100, of Thomasville will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Dawson Street Baptist Church, where he was a member. Rev. Lee Waller will officiate and interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Spears passed away Sept 9 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman. Born April 28, 1912 in Boston, he was the son of the late Gulver Spears and Essie Williams Spears. He was married to Irene Peters Cannon Spears who survives and was preceded in death by wives Katie Williams Spears and Vernoy Onsby Spears. Mr. Spears was a veteran of the United States Army where he served in World War II in Northern France Ardennes, Rhineland Central Europe GO 105 WD 45, he drove heavy duty trucks in Red Ball Express to front lines at night 2 years. He received the Red American Theater Ribbon Eamet, Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, was a member of 565 Anti-Aircraft; was a member of the Golden K, DAV, VFW and American Legion. He also sold cars for Thomasville Sales for several years. He was a loving person and husband and loved gardening, fishing and boating. Other survivors include son, William Larry Spears and wife Debbie of Lake Toxaway, NC; stepsons, Johnny Atkinson and Norbert Cannon; step-daughter, Patricia C. Truitt and husband Fred all of Thomasville; brother, Erwin Spears and wife Juanita of Nahunter, and sister, Esther Long of Thomasville; sister-in-law, Doris Williams; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a 6 year old sister, Catherine. The family will receive friends 6-8 pm at Allen & Allen Funeral Home. Guests may sign the online register at
