William Gains Slaughter Md

Graveside services for William Gains Slaughter, M.D. of Thomasville will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, July 8, 2018 in Laurel Hill Cemetery on Louisiana St. Dr. Slaughter passed away on July 5, 2018. He was born on December 7, 1937 in Jefferson County, Alabama to Frank & Annie Slaughter. He and his sister were raised by their loving parents in Haleyville, Alabama. He went to Howard College and graduated in 1960, then on to the University of Alabama Medical School, graduating in 1964. He married the love of his life, Gloria Kirkland Slaughter, on June 2, 1960. He served his country in the U S Army (Active and Reserve) from 1965-1986, retiring as Colonel. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Aviation Medical Officers Badge, Vietnam Service Medal (4 campaigns), Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, 2O/S Bars, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. In 1979, he and the family moved to Thomasville, GA where he was Medical Director at Archbold and Thomas County Community Mental Health Center until 1991 and then Archbold Northside from 1991-1997. He was a consultant at Southwestern state hospital, practiced at Vashti Residential Treatment Center for Children, and was able to consult and practice overseas at Tairawhiti Healthcare in Gisborne New Zealand, Launceston General Hospital in Launceston Tasmania, Nelson Hospital in Nelson, New Zealand, and Georgetown hospital in Grand Cayman Island. He currently consulted for The Bishop Foundation and Southwest Community Clinic. He thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his wife and playing golf with his sons, grandsons, and friends. He loved Alabama football, and making people laugh. His sense of humor and compassion were his trademarks and he loved people well. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria, his sons, Phil (Sharon), Mike (Amanda), and Andy (Laurie), his grandchildren, Patrick, (Sarah), Jordan, Mariah, Bailey, Harrison, Anna, Colson, Ava, and Marshall Slaughter, Zach and Spencer Sherrod, two great grandchildren, Landon Slaughter and Sawyer Sherrod, his sister Betty Stringfellow, and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Vashti Residential Treatment Center for Children, 1815 E. Clay St, Thomasville, Ga 31792. The family will receive friends 4-6pm, Saturday, July 7 at Allen & Allen Funeral Home.
