William C. (Bill) Sullivan, Sr., of Thomasville, GA, passed away peacefully at home, on January 9, 2024. He was born September 17, 1928, in McCaysville, Georgia to Dessie and Robert Sullivan. On April 21, 1951, he married Eleanor Rhea Adams who preceded him in death. On July 6, 1989, he married Joan Tolar Carr, who preceded him in death.
Bill graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950 and remained a loyal Bulldog fan throughout his life. In the early years, he worked in the Forestry Consulting business in the Southeast. Later he was employed by International Paper Co., retiring after 41 years as Manager of the Company’s Eastern Region Land and Timber Group. He was active in several Forestry professional organizations, a member of the Georgetown County, SC Chamber of Commerce, and United Way. Bill served as First Lieutenant in the Korean War.
Bill loved the outdoors and traveling. Most days you would find Bill walking with his dog Luke, in the pecan orchard, at Cherokee Lake Park. Most of all he loved his family.
He is survived by his son, Bill Sullivan, Jr. and his wife Jan, of Mazatlan, Mexico; a daughter, Sandy Merck and her husband Mike, of Palmetto, Fl.; a stepson, Tommy Carr of Thomasville, GA; a stepdaughter, Beth Brown and partner Steve Sexton, of Thomasville, GA.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Jenny Vanderhyde and her husband Derek of Alexandria, VA; Adam Sullivan of Ansbach, Germany; Ryan Merck, and his wife Lindsey and great-grandchildren Kinley, Callie, and Macie of Davenport, FL; Kristen Hormann, and her husband Mark and great-grandchildren Kya and Blake, of Bainbridge Island, WA; Ser Brown, of Denver, CO, Nathan Brown, of Indianapolis, IN, and Benjamin Brown, of New Castle, IN.
A celebration of life will be held on February 10th at 11 a.m. at the Thomasville First Methodist Church chapel.
