Funeral services for William R. Thomas Jr. will be held at 10:30AM, Friday, May 23, 2014 in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church. Mr. Thomas died May 21, 2014. The Rev. Dr. Milton C. Gardner and Rev. Marty Carnes will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the home of Susan Terry located at 210 Sherwood Dr., Thomasville, GA.
Mr. Thomas was born in 1927 to Mr. And Mrs. William Richard Thomas Sr. He and Jeanine Dodgen were married on August 8, 1950 in Atlanta, Georgia He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeanine, and five children; Susan Terry (Zack) of Destin and Thomasville, MaryLu Odom (Keith) of Lilburn,Ga., Rick Thomas of Thomasville, John Thomas (June) of Jasper, Tenn, Laura Throop of Gulfport, Miss., fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and his Brother Jim and wife Joan. Bill was active in the Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.
He was very patriotic and enlisted in the U.S. Navy the week he graduated from Thomasville High School. After the war he entered the University Of Georgia School Of Pharmacy. While at Georgia, he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, Rho Chi scholastic pharmacy fraternity and graduated in the top 10% of his class. Active in First Baptist Church of Thomasville where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of twelve, he served as a teacher, department director and longtime deacon. He was named honorary life time deacon at the age of 70. He participated in mission trips including church building in New York and worked with Southern Baptist in Vancouver during the Expo in 1986. He became affiliated with Thomas Drug Store with his family in 1950 and opened the Gordon Avenue store in 1954. Bill retired in 1984. As a pharmacist, he served on the State Board of Pharmacy for five years. During his working years he served on the Y.M.C.A. board and the Chamber of Commerce Board. He served as a director of the Commercial Bank for 31 years.
He was a member and past president of the Thomasville Kiwanis club with over 30 years of perfect attendance and was made an honorary life member.
Jeanine and Bill enjoyed the North Georgia Mountains and had a cabin at Skylake for 25 years. They were active at Helen First Baptist Church and were the longest continued members having started when it was meeting in a double wide trailer.
